Partners

A community group, or meitheal, supported by Oideas Gael, is implementing the project. We are extremely grateful to all of our partners who have provided us with funding, guidance or practical support.

This project has been funded by The Heritage Council through its Community Heritage Grant Scheme (2021 & 2022). In 2021, this project received support though the Colmcille1500 Grant Scheme which is funded by the North West Development Fund and Creative Ireland, in conjunction with and supported by The Executive Office and The Irish Government.

This year, we are undertaking a special initiative, in collaboration with artist Tom Cosgrove (Beoigh), to produce an imaginative printed map based on the work of the placenames project. This initiative is funded by the Donegal Culture & Creativity Grant Scheme 2022, through the Creative Ireland programme, with the support of Donegal County Council and the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media.

We wish to acknowledge the important support of the School of History & Geography, Dublin City University, who host the online map. Dr Susan Hegarty and an Dr Jonathan Cherry provide the project with expert advice in relation to mapping/GIS services. Our thanks also to Dr Margaret McCaul, of the Insight SFI Research Centre for Data Analytics, for carrying out photogrammetric surveys at a number of important sites in Gleann Cholm Cille, the results of which can be accessed via the placenames map.

The project has benefitted from ongoing collaboration with Donegal County Council and its officers. We wish to recognise the assistance of Joseph Gallagher, County Heritage Officer, and Daragh McDonough (County Donegal Map Portal) who faciliated the sharing of data from the Donegal Place Names project.
